I have been to Alton Towers countless times over the last couple of years (mainly due to the investment of a Merlin Annual Pass) and have mainly had good experiences. The rides are usually functioning, and the queues pretty low. Staff have dealt well with complaints though the general feeling with staff is that they're there because they have to be, rather than because they want to be. I have found the staff at other parks within the UK to be more accommodating and generally more friendly than at Alton Towers.
That said, during my last trip, a day visit for my birthday at the end of July, I had a rather good day, the patrols welcoming people and guiding people around the park are really cool, the pirate show is just laughable, but in a good way, but my highest commendation of the trip goes to the Oblivion Ride Operators as that particular day there was a long queue and 2 metres from the station entrance 2 girls asked if they could basically push in as they had decided they no longer wished to ride single rider, which I refused, but saw they pushed in the queue not too far behind us so I informed the queue attendant who promptly and swiftly dealt with the queue jumpers and ejected them and their 6 friends from the ride.
Overall I hope Merlin decide to pay more attention to the guest experience, particularly at Alton Towers, where even rerides on anything more thrilling than the River Rapids is prohibited.
What have your experiences been?
